When Rewiring Becomes Necessary
Raglan has a lot of older homes. Baches that started as weekend retreats and became permanent residences, villas and cottages built when electrical demand was a couple of lights and a stove. That original wiring was never designed for a dishwasher, two heat pumps, EV charging, and a home office.
Signs it is time to rewire: flickering lights with no clear cause, breakers tripping regularly, discoloured or cracked wall plates, a burning smell with no visible source, or rubber-insulated cables that are brittle to the touch. All of these are symptoms of wiring that has reached or exceeded its service life.
A full rewire replaces all the cables in the home and brings everything up to current standards. A partial rewire targets the most at-risk circuits. We will always tell you honestly which option makes sense for your situation.
Rewiring Services
Every rewire is different. Here is what we commonly do.
🏠
Complete replacement of all fixed wiring. New cables, new switchboard, new outlets and fittings. Done to current NZ Wiring Rules from start to finish.
🔁
Targeting the highest-risk circuits or a specific area. Often the most cost-effective first step for older homes not yet ready for a full rewire.
🔌
Adding new circuits to an upgraded board. Kitchen, laundry, heat pump, EV charging, workshop. Done properly, with correct cable sizing and RCD protection.
📋
Addressing wiring issues before listing. Buyers, lawyers, and insurers are alert to old wiring. We can scope and fix the key issues in one visit.
🛡
Before any rewire we do a proper inspection. Written condition report, recommended scope of work, options from targeted repair to full rewire.
📄
COC and ESC on every job. Correct documentation protects you at sale, with insurers, and for any future electrical work on the property.
How We Rewire
A rewire is a significant job. Here is how we approach it to minimise disruption.
1
Full inspection of existing wiring. Written report on what is found and what needs doing. No surprises mid-job.
2
Clear scope of work. Whole-house, partial, or targeted. Fixed price, no hidden extras.
3
For occupied homes, we work room by room where possible to keep disruption to a minimum. We coordinate with plasterers and painters if making good is required.
4
Full test of all circuits on completion. COC issued. Every circuit labelled on the new board.

“We had a 1960s bach that had been added to four times with wiring from four different decades. Vaughan went through it methodically, explained exactly what was a risk and what was fine, and did a staged rewire that sorted the main issues without wrecking the house. Clear communication throughout.”

Common Questions
Straight answers, no waffle.
Key signs: regularly tripping breakers, flickering lights, burning smell with no obvious source, cracked or discoloured outlets and plates, rubber-insulated cables that are hard and brittle. If your home was built before 1980 and has never had electrical work done, an inspection is worth doing.
A typical 3-4 bedroom home takes three to five days of electrical work. Plastering and painting to make good is separate and depends on how the cables were run. We will give you a realistic time estimate when we quote.
Not necessarily, but it depends on the size of the job and the layout of the house. For whole-house rewires in occupied homes we try to maintain power to at least part of the house each night. We will discuss practicalities when we scope the job.
A COC (Certificate of Compliance) and ESC (Electrical Safety Certificate) on completion. These are legal requirements for this type of work and are essential for insurance, future sale, and any future electrical additions.
